High
gas prices are forcing people to drive less, and the
fuel
efficiency of new hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles is
making it
increasingly more difficult for county road commissions
to pay for
road repair, construction and maintenance.
This
is because road commissions are too dependent
on gas tax
revenue for provision of these services.
With gas prices soaring, we
simply cannot afford a gas tax increase to pay for better road
maintenance.
As
your Oakland County Commissioner I
will support the study of
alternatives to fuel taxes for road
funding that collect revenue in a
more equitable manner
across road user groups inclusive of sources
which
may come from mileage
fees, toll roads, development
impact
fees, general tax revenue and public private partnerships.
